Role of IMFO in ensuring Effective Municipal Service Delivery PDF Print E-mail
Professionalism is simply a matter of maintaining high standards and ethics. These attributes improve a profession, in this case, that of the municipal finance officer. Municipal Finance Officers are constantly under pressure to act professionally and to deliver work of a professional nature, increasingly so over the last few years. These officers constantly need to advise the decision-makers in local government about the financial state of affairs of the communities they serve.

Besides its accounting function, municipal financial officers need to control the income and expenditure of rates and taxes of communities.  The analysis of the information and more particularly the implications, together with sound advice, need to be conveyed to their executive committees and councils. Should good advice be given and followed, the result will be financial health. Should poor advice be given, disaster may follow.
As the keeper of the public purse, the municipal finance officer is professionally accountable to everyone in his/her community, ranging from the richest to the poorest.
Professionalism and ethics do not come by themselves. Furthermore, they cannot maintain themselves. The Institute provides the framework for municipal finance officers to, collectively, enhance and maintain professionalism and ethics in the field of municipal finance.
